When to Carry, When to Release

Jesus once told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan” (Matthew 16:23). It sounds sharp, but it was love drawing a boundary. Even perfect love sometimes says no.

Paul gives us language for this in Galatians 6: “Carry each other’s burdens… for each should carry their own load.” A burden is like moving a heavy sofa. You need someone else on the other side. A load is like carrying your own backpack. No one else can do that for you.

The problem comes when we confuse the two. Sometimes we rush in to carry someone’s load, sparing them from responsibility God intends for their growth. We call it love, but it is really rescuing. And rescue without truth keeps people stuck.

Healthy love says, “I’ll help lift what’s too heavy, but I won’t rob you of the strength that comes from carrying your own weight.” That’s not cruelty. It’s Christlike clarity.

Boundaries don’t shrink love. They refine it. They help us know when to pick up a corner of the sofa and when to let someone walk with their own pack. That’s how love grows stronger without losing itself.

Read: Galatians 6:1-5

1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5 For each one will bear his own load.

Reflect: Who in your life needs you to carry a burden with them, and who needs you to step back and let them carry their load?
