The Yes Behind Every No

Have you ever overdrawn your bank account? When more goes out than comes in, stress and frustration follow. The same happens in our hearts. We keep saying yes, giving more and more, until our “emotional bank account” is empty. That’s when we snap, lose patience, or even stumble into sin because we’re spent.

Jesus knew how to guard against this. He said no to the crowd so He could be alone with the Father (Matthew 14). He said no to being crowned before the cross (John 6). He said no to demands that didn’t fit His mission. Each “no” created space for a greater “yes” to the Father’s will.

Our culture praises busyness and overcommitment. We’re told the more we do, the more valuable we are. But boundaries remind us our worth is in God, not in constant activity. Boundaries aren’t barriers to love; they are lanes that keep love on course. Saying no isn’t about rejecting people. It’s about leaving space to hear God’s voice and follow His calling. When we say no to fear, comparison, and guilt, we say yes to peace, rest, and obedience. A faithful no makes space for God’s best.

Based on the message, “The Power of ‘No'” by Pastor James Marano

Read: Mark 10:17-22

17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

Reflect: What is one area where overcommitting has drained you…and how might saying no there free you to say yes to God?
