Some wounds don’t come from what was done to us. They come from what was revealed about us.
A private failure.
A weakness shared publicly.
A mistake turned into gossip.
A vulnerable moment handled without tenderness.
There’s a reason Scripture speaks so often about “covering.”
In Genesis 9, Noah falls into drunkenness after a lifetime of faithfulness. One son exposes him. The others walk backward with a garment in their hands, choosing dignity over humiliation. Covering in Scripture is not pretending sin doesn’t exist. It’s refusing to weaponize truth.
We live in a world that rewards exposure. Private moments become headlines. But the Spirit of Christ moves differently. He tells the truth without stripping people naked.
Some of us are grieving wounds we caused. Others are grieving wounds caused to us.
God calls us to cover others because He first covered us. While we were still exposed, ashamed, and far from Him.
God doesn’t ignore brokenness. He restores it carefully. Like an artist repairing shattered pottery with gold, He has a way of touching what was fractured without pretending the cracks never existed.
The cross isn’t God humiliating sinners. It’s God clothing them.
Read: Ephesians 4:1-3; Genesis 9:18-27; 1 Peter 4:8
Ephesians 4:1-3 —
1Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Genesis 9:18-27 —
18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth; and Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and from these the whole earth was populated.
20 Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank some of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it on both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,
“Cursed be Canaan;
A servant of servants
He shall be to his brothers.”
26 He also said,
“Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And may Canaan be his servant.
27 May God enlarge Japheth,
And may he live in the tents of Shem;
And may Canaan be his servant.”
1 Peter 4:8 —
Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Reflect: Have your words recently clothed someone or uncovered them?
