The Devil in the Details

3 am wake up

Most of us don’t need a crisis to get thrown off course. Maybe it’s a headache, a harsh text, or one frustrating moment that somehow throws everything off. It’s not always just an inconvenience. At times, it’s the enemy being intentional.

Ephesians 6:10 says, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” Paul doesn’t tell us to be strong in ourselves, in our discipline, our productivity, or our ability to hold everything together. He reminds us that real strength comes from God. Why? Because whether we realize it or not, we’re in a battle.

Picture this: It’s 3 a.m. You wake up with a tight chest, a sick stomach, and your thoughts won’t stop swirling. Nothing specific is wrong, but something still feels off. Even after the moment passes, a spiritual weight remains.

That’s how the enemy works. Quiet. Creeping. Disorienting. Subtle distractions. Misplaced fears. Lingering offense. He rarely storms in. More often, he just nudges you off course. His goal isn’t just to scare you. It’s to wear you down, isolate you, and ultimately destroy you.

But God gives us armor to stand: truth, peace, faith, salvation, righteousness, His Word, and prayer. Underneath it all, He gives discernment. The clarity to recognize when the real fight isn’t physical but spiritual. To notice when the enemy is whispering instead of roaring. When we stay alert and anchored in God’s truth, we don’t just endure — we resist. And we stand.

Victory isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about holding your ground because Christ already secured it. Lay down the fear. Let go of the pressure. Stand in the power of His finished work. You don’t fight for victory, you fight from it.

Based on the sermon, “Be Strong in the Lord” by Pastor James Marano

Read: Ephesians 6:10-20 NASB

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Reflect: What’s one way you can be more alert to the spiritual patterns beneath your daily struggles?
