Shelter in a Shaking World

Picture standing under a tree in the summer heat. The sun blazes, but in the shade you feel cool and refreshed. Step away, and the heat quickly presses in again. Psalm 91 paints the same picture: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

In the same way, our world feels scorching. Violence, division, and tragedy swirl around us. Headlines and social media leave us weary, even fearful. And we admit this is hard, a real struggle to carry. We get worked up and feel the ache deep inside. Some cry out; others shout; some remain silent. Together it sounds like a chorus of mixed voices, echoing unrest and carrying a heavy weight.

In the middle of this chorus, we need to remember that refuge isn’t found in governments or opinions. Refuge is found in God alone. Clinging to politics or platforms can turn them into idols. They cannot save us. Only God can steady us. Living in His shadow means staying close enough to hear His voice above the noise. It means letting His presence filter what enters our hearts. And it means trusting His goodness even when the world feels dark and we cannot understand.

This doesn’t mean ignoring what happens around us. It means we choose love even when hatred tries to steal our attention from every other voice. We guard our hearts when fear or anger rise. And we let our words reflect Christ, bringing grace instead of feeding arguments.

So through it all, we stay in the shadow of the Almighty. His presence is the only place where peace truly lasts. The chorus of culture may be loud, but His shadow holds stillness that calms and peace that endures.

Read: Psalm 91:1-4

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”
3 For it is He who delivers you from the snare of the trapper
And from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with His pinions,
And under His wings you may seek refuge;
His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

Reflect: Where are you finding shelter these days? In the shadow of God’s presence, or in the noise and weight of the world?
