Pray With Your Eyes Open

Sometimes we rush into prayer with words already loaded. We articulate our needs, people to mention, outcomes to ask for. But Daniel didn’t start that way. Before he spoke, he looked. Scripture says, “I, Daniel, observed in the books…” He paid attention to what God had already said. His prayer began with noticing.

That’s the quiet difference between asking and aligning. Daniel wasn’t trying to get God to move faster; he was trying to move closer. He set aside comfort, fasted, and humbled himself because he wanted his heart to match heaven’s. His breakthrough didn’t begin with bold declarations. It began with open eyes.

Maybe that’s where attentive prayer begins for us too. It’s the moment we pray with our eyes open, not merely to our surroundings but toward God Himself, fixed on the Author and Perfecter of our faith. When we notice the promise in His Word that belongs to this moment. When we pause long enough to see the story we’re already standing in.

So before you pray today, look up. Look back. Look around. Notice His fingerprints. Because sometimes the miracle isn’t that God finally answered; it’s that we finally saw.

Read: Daniel 9:1-4; Psalm 51:10-12

Daniel 9:1-4

1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of Median descent, who was made king over the kingdom of the Chaldeans— 2 in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, observed in the books the number of the years which was revealed as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet for the completion of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years. 3 So I gave my attention to the Lord God to seek Him by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth and ashes. 4 I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed and said, “Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments,

Psalm 51:10-12

10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation
And sustain me with a willing spirit.

Reflect: Before you ask, what do you see God already saying or doing in this moment?
