More than a Mirror

Some mirrors don’t tell the truth.
They stretch us. Shrink us. Distort what’s really there.

That’s how many of us live. Looking at ourselves through the mirror of pain, fear, anger, or shame. We zoom in on the worst parts and call it our identity. God never intended those distortions to define us.

Scripture says truth is a mirror too. But this mirror heals. It restores clarity. It shows us who we really are in Christ.

And Scripture is also a window. It doesn’t only reveal who we are. It reveals where we are going. Through it, God shows us the way forward.

Paul writes that we’re invited into an exchange. We aren’t asked to improve the old self. We’re told to take it off and put on the new self, created in the likeness of God. Righteous. Holy. True.

The old self whispers lies. Protect yourself. Stay guarded. Hide your wounds. Control your world.

The new self speaks differently. It lives from grace. It responds with peace. It is formed by truth, not history.

Anger no longer controls you. Shame no longer names you. Fear no longer fathers you.

You are not what you did. You are not what was done to you. You are who God says you are.

This doesn’t mean perfection. It means progress. It means daily choosing which self you will put on. The one shaped by yesterday’s wounds or the one shaped by Christ’s restoring love.

God is not asking you to fix yourself. He’s inviting you to let Him make you new.

Read: Ephesians 4:22-24

22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.

Reflect: Which voice has been shaping how you see yourself lately, your old story or God’s truth?

Based on the sermon, “Putting on the New Self” by Pastor James Marano
